HOW GOOD IS YOUR PERSONAL SECURITY?

This week's article is designed to create awareness and a proactive approach to responsible security.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you dependent on private security for preventing intrusions?
  • How fast is your armed response service?
  • Can they find your residence easily?
  • Can they access your property in your absence without jumping over gates, walls and fences?
  • Do you test your alarm regularly and particularly after an electrical thunderstorm?
  • Is the alarm and radio in a secure area where it cannot be unplugged?
  • Have you registered a distress codeword with the control room?
  • Have you installed an early warning device on the property?
  • Is your alarm fitted with a self triggering device when the alarm is unarmed?
  • Have you a long range portable panic button facility?
  • Is your gate or front door fitted with an intercom?
  • Is your passage to the bedroom area secured with a lockable gate?
  • Do you park your car and close garage doors so that criminals can’t see whether you are home or not?
  • Do you keep at least 2 small dogs on the property?
  • Have you copies of your staff’s I.D.’s and their photographs?
  • Have you recorded their family contact numbers and addresses?
  • Have you checked for criminal history?
  • Are their living quarters fitted with a panic button?
  • Do you have a strategy in place to encourage whistle blowing at home and at work?

Mobile security

  • Do you realize how frequently people suddenly just disappear while driving?
  • Is your vehicle equipped with a tracking device fitted in the event of being hijacked and abducted?
  • Are you connected to eblockwatch?
  • Do you lock your car doors?
  • Do you leave your windows slightly open to counter smash and grab attempts?
  • Do you place your valuables out of sight in the car?
  • Do you park sensibly with car guards in attendance?
  • Do you get distracted by answering your cell phone while driving?
  • Are your children secure in the vehicle?
  • Do you have an emergency tyre inflator onboard in case of a puncture?
  • Do you watch intersections for potential hijackers?
  • Do you watch to see if your vehicle is being followed?
  • Do you open and close your gate rapidly when entering your property?

Reading this it actually makes me realise what we go through everyday to keep ourselves safe. It actually sounds absurd. Imagine telling someone in Norway that this is what you do daily. I just think that when you reach these levels - it is time to say goodbye and pack for safer lands.

I went through these questions and suprised myself at how many times I said NO to the questions raised. I always thought i was vigilant about crime, but now I realised just how much more I could do.

I was especially mortified that i had not arranged a secret distress code word. What a simple thing to do - yet i had not done it.

In the car I am very aware, but this has definitely made me realise i need to jack up my home security
