Do we fight back - apparently not!
Many of us feel helpless in this country, where we seem to be losing the war against crime on a daily basis.
Everyday we open the papers and read countless stories on crime. Even our “Government” has admitted that “The situation is sometimes so overwhelming that we don’t know what to do about crime.”
The SAPS do a good job with the resources they are given, but capacity-wise, there is just not enough cops and detectives on the beat.
We are basically at “system-overload” right now.
Criminals are just getting the better of us.
So what do we do?
Do we fight back?
I would usually say, “Yes, of course” - given that we are in the constraints of the law.
However, after reading an article on News24, I am beginning to think otherwise.
It seems that innocent victims of crime are less important than those “precious darling criminals” we have out there.
Don’t believe me?
Well, Stefan Kloppers has learnt this lesson - the hard way.
In July, Kloppers, rushed to help a woman, tackling a thief who had stolen her cellphone.
But now this hero is being charged with assault with the intention of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Kloppers had that night been having dinner with friends at a restaurant in Hatfield. They were on their way to his car when they saw an informal parking guard harass the woman.
"I thought he wanted money and walked on. Suddenly the woman yelled and said he had her cellphone. I chased after him and tackled him like I did at school when I was playing rugby," said Kloppers.
He took the phone from the man's hand and gave it back to the woman. "He didn't argue," said Kloppers.
He got into his car and while leaving the parking area, he was stopped by five security guards who told him to stay there as they had seen "exactly" what had happened.
Police were called and Kloppers was taken to the police station where he thought he would make a statement about the incident. Instead he was arrested. He was held for two days in a police cell before he was released on bail.
Kloppers is being prosecuted even though police have still not taken a statement from the "victim", the suspected thief. Police have also not arrested the suspected thief for stealing the phone.
Yes, you read that right. The alleged criminal hasn’t even laid charges against Stefan, and yet he is up for trial.
I am sure Stefan just wants this whole thing to go away. However, the case has been postponed once again because the court needs a statement from the alleged thief on the assault.
Imagine the legal costs – and all for helping a woman get her cellphone back!
And why are we wasting valuable court time on this?
A “large percentage” of the 2 million crimes reported each year is never solved due to a severe lack of detectives, forensic experts and resources. 655,000 cases were last year thrown out of court chiefly due to lack of evidence.
But this case however, it is of national importance. Stefan is a dangerous criminal. (Please note sarcasm)
Even more infuriating is that when the court was told that the so-called victim was also a suspected thief, Magistrate Christopher Chokwe said, "When someone steals your phone, you don't attack him. You call the police."
Well, the thief will be long gone by then I would say!
In February, President Mbeki told the nation that “We need to mobilise the public for a massive onslaught on crime and corruption.”
Well, I think he needs to clarify this.
What will be next? If I am being dragged into a car by a group of men, can no one come to my aid in case they might scratch or bruise one of my attackers? Can we never come to the defence of others?
Kloppers certainly won’t be helping anyone soon. After this ordeal he has told the media that he will “Never again will I help a victim of crime in SA.”
Can you blame him?

THIS IS ABSURD. I AGREE WITH THE SENTENCING OF THE GUY WHO SHOT THE BABY ACCIDENTLY, AS YOU SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE WITH GUNS, BUT THIS IS GOING TOO FAR.

If we were to wait for cops to arrive, the robber wopuld vbe long gone. What a dumb judge.
PS...if the cell is stolen, what phone do you use if you are by yourself?

Please let us know what happens to this case....

This is ridiculous. It just shows you how the law can be manipulated - and it seems the bad guys always come out better

My son is a recovering heroin addict. He and the dealer were caught. My son was held for 48 hours and the dealer walked after two hours. He paid off a policeman. This all happened in Pretoria. I tipped off the police on this dealer's where-abouts, where he deals (area), drop-off times, runners, pick up times at the Drug Lords in Jhb and even gave a profile of this dealer. What happened?????? Nothing. I even gave tip-offs online, I made the police an offer to help them catch this guy (Nigerian). I gave his cellphone number, everything that can possibly help them. I repeated my offer in writing. Nothing happened. The police are just not interested in the dealers. They lock up the users. What for?? When that kids get out, they just do use again, because the dealer is still out there and contactable. It's the Drug Lord's and Drug Dealers fault that so many people in South Africa is bankrupt. It cost us R68,000.00 on rehab for my son. That's money that the average person on street don't have. After rehab you still have to watch the addict closely and can't really trust them. It takes a long, long time to get back to normal again. What do we have to do to take this bastards off the streets. At a stage I did have the idea to take him out myself. Am I a potential murderer???????? What will other parents do to protect their kids??????

Thanks for the posting. It is a disgrace that the police have chosen to ignore you. Might I suggest you send a message to the crime line hotline - you sms 32211 or go to their website https://www.crimeline.co.za, and send an email.
They are pretty good at following up on these kinds of tip-offs. Try and supply them with as much detail as you possibly can.
All emails and sms's remain anonymous.
We wish your son the best of luck in his recovery.
Kind Regards

Thanks for the link to CrimeLIne. I just did a tip-off and now just have to see if somebody is going to do something about this fella.
This is my mission in life to do something about drug lords/dealers/runners. Not just for my kids/grandkids but for every parent out there. My eldest son (33) passed away on 27 Feb 2008 because of ALS (Motor Neuron Disease). I just can not loose another kid. I could'nt do anything for my eldest son, because nobody know what the cause of ALS is and nobody knows how to cure ALS. Some people live with ALS (Steven Hawking) with many years and some others, like my son, died within 3 to 5 years. The main thing is, I can fight for my youngest son, I can do something, except praying, to save my son from this DEVIL. If every parent just go and sit and think about this, every parent will help in the fight against drugs. It CAN happen to anyone. I never in my life thought that any of my kids will do drugs. But it did happen. I have to live with it. I prayed for 7 years that my son will come to his senses. At last on 11 January 2008 it happened. He choose to go to rehab and became a Christian on 23 January 2008. He was in rehab for 5 weeks and he is now clean for 245 days. But I can assure you that the devil is still out there, trying to take hold of him again. If any drug addict is reading this, I can give you one very important tip. Get rid of all your addict friends if you want to win. Your so called "friends" will drag you down again. Every addict has to decide for him/herself that this is the end of the road. Nobody can force you to go to rehab, because this will not help. I can write a book on drugs and rehab. If anyone wants to contact me, please leave a message on the blog and we find a way to get in touch.

Dear mamma
My heart went out to you when I read your blog. All I can say, is don't take him out yourself. Don't go down to their level. I know they are the scum of the earth preying on our children and the vulnerable. But you could land yourself in jail.
bigmamma:
Thanks for you message Anonymous, I do appreciate every message. It helps to know there are others that read my message, since I want to send out this message to all parents and kids out there. Yes, your'e right. If I am in jail, who will look after my son??? It is only me who has not give up on him. I know deep inside he is the most wonderful person. I did raise him and taught him all the good stuff, how to be a gentleman and treat all woman/girls like ladies, etc. I just keep on praying.

Surely we can do something to help this guy? It is crazy that he has truned into the criminal?
If he gets senteced for this- then how can we not stand up and all fight this judgement. We need to help victims- it is imperitive.
Anonymous:
If this is how victims are treated then I may as well give up on SA.
Yes, criminals are being treated as though they are the victims. They are not scared of the law anymore, and it is up to us to priotect ourselves, and when we do - this is what happens!!!!
Anonymous:
I don't blame Stefan for not wanting to help another victim! After spending two days in jail - where he could of been raped, and contracted Aids - can you blame him! What an ordeal!
Anonymous:
So we cant help victims of crime then? We see a women being raped and we are supposed to stand back - even if there are a few of us that could help her?
What is wrong with our system? It is so heavily flawed. The police will actually spend time trying to track down the thief to testify against the hero, when it should be the thief in the dock.

What a load of BS. We spend more time f***ing up victims lives then that of the criminal.

Have we really come to this?
Are we spending the cops time and the courts in tracking down a criminal that was rugby tackled?
I just have no words right now, becuase i am sitting here in utter disbelief.
